Motorcycle Training Frequently Asked Questions
From our years of experience, we have been asked a wide range of questions related to our Motorcycle Training.
Here are some of our most frequently asked questions:
Do I Have to Own a Motorcycle / Moped?
No! We have geared and automatic bikes available for hire, from 50cc to 500cc, so you'll always be riding a machine that you feel comfortable with. We also use high-quality bike-to-bike radios to ensure that wherever you are, your instructor can talk you through any situation.
What About Safety?
Safety is paramount no matter what you ride, so helmets and other safety equipment are available for hire, ensuring you stay safe and dry while out on your bike.
We also have video recording equipment to capture your ride-out on tape, helping us to identify any areas that need improvement, as well as what you're doing right!
What is CBT?
Compulsory Basic Training is a course that must be completed by all learner riders, as well as drivers who obtained their full car licence on or after 1 February 2001 before riding unaccompanied on the road. You must be 16 years of age or over to take CBT.
What Will I Learn?
During your CBT at Compass, you'll learn the following in a safe and enjoyable environment:
- Motorcycling theory
- Road safety skills
- The correct attitude towards motorcycling
You'll have fun, as well as the opportunity to meet like-minded motorcyclists and, if you're very lucky, you'll get a complimentary coffee or two!
Do I Need To Have Passed the Theory Test?
Not for the CBT. However all motorcycle test candidates must have passed the theory test before booking a practical test (this became compulsory in February 2001). The only exception is if you already hold a full moped licence obtained by passing both a theory and practical test on a previous occasion.
We are happy to offer you help with theory practice, completely free of charge to candidates booked on a Compass course. Copies of The Highway Code are available for £2.50.
What's Next?
Having completed your CBT; You may wish to consider that passing your practical test with give you the skills to improve your safety which will in turn have a possative affect on your insurance premiums. New restriction to younger riders are now in effect so read up on new licence options.
Aged 24 or Over?
If you are 24 years of age or over, (once you have completed your CBT) you can take a Direct Access course. This is a fast track to a full licence, allowing you to ride any size machine once you have passed.
What Will the Lessons Involve?
As with all of our courses, training is tailored to your needs and everything is done at your own pace. You can even build up your confidence on a 125cc machine before progressing to a 500cc - you'll never feel pressured to do anything you don't feel ready for.
At Compass we are dedicated to teaching you how to be a responsible, confident rider who, by the end of the course, will be fully equipped with the skills and knowledge for a lifetime's safe and enjoyable riding!
Thinking of Returning to Biking?
Refresher courses are a great way of brushing up on road craft skills; so, if you hold a full licence and you're thinking of returning to biking, or if you've just passed your test and feel you'd like some help getting used to your new bike, then this course could be for you!
